Against The Wind
11 August 2014

Left early and headed for Goderich. The wind was doing all kinds of interesting things in the morning and we even had the sails up for a bit. We experienced some problems with our windex as it was showing us the wind rotating around the boat and speeds of only a few knots but the wind vane on top of the mast was pointing in the correct direction.....Hmmmmm! I had to pull all of the wiring out of the base of the mast and redo the connections. Repowered the unit and still had the same problem. Pushed the true Wind/Apparent Wind button and everything corrected itself. It may have been accidentally pushed when closing the companionway hatch. I'm not sure if we had 1 problem or 2 but it works now so that's what counts.
In the afternoon the waves and head wind started building and we seeing wind speeds in excess of 20 knots with 3-4 waved where else but right on the nose. We finally arrived at Goderich and got a slip for the night. For those of you not familiar with Goderich, it is the town that got hit by a tornado that wiped out a lot of their trees and heritage buildings in their town core. The town was actually only 3 towns in Ontario that was planned from the beginning. It's government building is in the centre of town and the streets octagonally radiate out from there. It boasts being the Prettiest Town in Canada and the best place to watch sunsets as you get to see them twice a night: once on the beach and then run up the hill to catch it again...if you're fast enough.
Goderich is also home to the Sifto salt mine, the largest in the western world. It produces 45% of Canada'salt and is 1800' below the surface of Lake Huron. Now, it just so happens that we can see the mine and processing operation because the yacht club is right beside it. Not the most picturesque marina we've been to but any port in a storm so they say.
