We Gotta Get Outta This Place, If It's The Last Thing We Ever Do!

16 August 2014
Day 6 of the Goderich experience and once again, the weather would not cooperate to allow us to leave. The wind came up in the middle of the night, just as the forecast predicted and the lake was once again a mess of short period, big waves. There were 2 very large American power yachts, small ships really as one was over 80’ long, came in last night and tied up in the Sifto Salt ship basin as they were too deep to get into the marina where we are moored. I don’t know how the crossing was for them as their “crew” was not available for comments.

We borrowed a vehicle from the marina today and went grocery shopping and stocked up as we may need to lay in a lot of food for the winter. No, really, this is starting to resemble a cross between a Steven King novel and the Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day (I know, I already used this reference when we were in Wiarton). But, we get up every morning expecting it to be different, and it isn’t!

We heard there was a sailing race out of Bayfield today and wondered if they actually held it. We saw a couple of boats leave our harbour last night heading there when the weather had settled for the night. It was actually nice last night, but that didn’t last.

This afternoon we saw a sailboat come into the Sifto basin without its mast. Apparently they got dismasted when their forestay let go and fortunately no one was hurt. The mast came down and crushed the dodger and lifeline but missed the bimini and the people under it. The mast was still attached to the boat and hanging underwater by some of the halyards. The shrouds had all be cut or disconnected. We’re not sure if they were in the race or not but there were some very big wind gusts this afternoon and this may have played a part.

Anyway, wind and waves are supposed to die tonight and tomorrow so we’re optimistic this will be our chance for our big getaway. I never thought I’d be looking so forward to going to Sarnia, of all places, but if it gets us off this lake, sign us up!
