Looking For a Brave New World

18 August 2014
Had a good night at the Sarnia Yacht Club and very reasonable at $40 for the night. We took the Welcome Mutt for a long walk in search of a cruising guide for Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie. We hit 2 marine stores in the area but no luck. Luckily Sam met a couple from Detroit who gave us a couple of flyers that had some useful info for the St. Clair River and Lake, which proved to be useful throughout the day.

We left the yacht club around noon and headed straight down the river. There was a 3 knot current at the entrance to the river so we were smokin’ down the river at over 10 knots! It was a quick trip down the river with lots of great scenery and amazing homes once we got past chemical ally in Sarnia. Full sun, warm and no wind...perfect day for motoring. You had to pay attention though because you’re sharing the channel with many very large freighters that are capable of travelling at over 20 knots. We had 1 catch up to us and we pulled into a side channel to let him pass.

Also passed the Nina and Pinta going north in the river. The Santa Maria was MIA for some reason. I didn’t know Columbus did the Great Lakes! You never know who you’re gonna run into on a trip like this.

We arrived at the end of the river at 4 pm but the 2 marinas we chose out the brochure we had ended up not working out: 1 was out of business and the other just for power boats. So, it was decision time...we either search for a place that may have enough water for our keel, look for a place to anchor or continue across the lake. We checked the weather and it was good for the rest of the day but not so much for tomorrow, so we headed out. We had the benefit of a being able to follow a freighter and the channel is very well marked. The average depth of Lake St. Clair is only 11’ so you don’t want to be going off track! Arrived in Windsor at 7 pm so not a bad day all in all!
