You're So Vain
24 August 2014

We spent the night at the Erie Yacht Club, which was established in 1895 and has a membership of over 1200 people. Their website boasts being one finest and friendliest clubs on the Great Lakes. I can only guess that the friendly members must not have been there yesterday as no one would give us the time of day aside from the security guard, who was a very nice man. Granted, their facility and grounds were very nice. However we won’t be transferring to that club to become part of the “finest”.
After checking the weather in the am we cast off and had a great day heading to Port Colborne on a relatively flat lake. We even got to sail for a while as the wind was cooperating. The day constantly improved with the sun coming out, flat seas and favourable winds. We got to Port Colborne and got a slip at Sugarloaf Marina. The staff there was extremely helpful giving us the scoop on the Welland Canal and the official handbook (doncha dare go near the thing without knowing this stuff!). they even got us hooked up for an online canal pass so we could save 30 bucks! Now that’s service.
We had a walk around town to stretch our legs and checked out the first lift bridge Also found the Canal Control Centre Batphone and talked to them to find out what kind of schedule we could expect for tomorrow. The guy said it looked pretty light for tomorrow in terms of commercial traffic so we should be in good shape. After dinner we hit the local ice cream stand just before it closed. Met some really friendly local people and chatted with them.
We have concluded that we met a lot of people because of Finn. He attracts a lot of attention which spurs conversation. Not many people have even heard of Whippets and think he’s a greyhound. BTW...he learned that squirrels can also escape up hydro poles and not just trees, so this has opened up a whole new realm of possibilities to search for prey. It also means we have to check out poles as well as trees now when we go for walks.
Tonight's shot is the bow of Haida Legend smartly parting the waves as she heads towards home. (Sorry, my arms weren't long enough to get a wider field of view and I wasn't going in the water for an approach shot.)
