Today's excursion took us to.....Mexico! Now, the easy way to go over the border would have been in the truck, however, you need special vehicle insurance to take a vehicle across the border so we opted to cross on foot. The really funny thing was there was no Mexican border office, booth, officer, dog, or even sign that stated we were entering into Mexico. The only indication was the fence with barbed wire and the buildings that looked like their best years were behind them....waaaay behind them!
We walked around with our friends Janet and Doug for a couple of hours and were asked probably 50 times if we needed any dental work, prescriptions or glasses. Apparently, this is a Huge business for Mexico and people actually come to the area just to go across the border to have this type of work done. We met a guy who had all of his teeth capped for $5k, and they looked good, vs. The $25k it would have cost him back in Canada. Other people get transition bi-focal prescription glasses for well under $100, ready in 2 hours or less! There is even a very high quality magazine that advertises all of these businesses that was available at the resort where we stayed. This is a multi billion (that's right, with a "B") business each year. Funny enough, there were billboards in Yuma advertising dentists on the US side of the border. It's a wonder they get any business.
It was very cold today so we decided to make tracks to get back across the border before Trump built the wall, so we headed back to the crossing. We came around the corner only to find a line of hundreds of people all lined up to get back across as well. After a brief 1.5 hour stand in line we got back across and huddled around the heater vents in the car! We spoke to a few people in line who do this regularly and this is typical in terms of waiting time. Now, the guy I mentioned that got the caps done had 6 separate visits across the border to get all of his work done. I can't think of a better way to spent a couple of hours after major dental work than to stand in line with a couple of thousand of you best friends for 1-2 hours, being accosted by souvenir vendors. Luckily all of the Mexican criminals, drug dealers and rapists are already in the US so security isn't an issue.
