Foggy Mountain Breakdown

20 December 2017

Tuesday was very foggy but it got up to 80F! Sam went to exercise class and I went for a run. It was so foggy that I was soon soaked though and had to run without glasses so I could see where I was going.

When I got back to the rig Finn was busy packing his hobo pack (his toys rolled up in his blanket hanging on the end of his Chuck-it ball launcher) and said he was outta here cuz the weather was so bad. He was heading to the train station to catch the 3:10 to Yuma as it's always sunny and warm there. A few treats changed his mind and we went to the dog park and played ball.

There was a Mexican dinner that evening, which as excellent and we then went for a walk and caught some of the local guys ripping up the radio controlled car track. These were very nice guys and 2 of them even let me have a try with their cars. Apparently they're indestructible as I ran them into anything and everything at amazing speeds! It's a dirt track and there is a timing system that captures laps and speed via chips in each of the cars. We also went to see pickle ball played in the main building. They used to play outdoors but found the wind and heat made it tough so they painted lines in the main rec. building and now play in air condition comfort.

Wednesday
They were calling for a nice day so we took the bikes and headed to the Bentsen State Park as our friends Janet and Doug told us it was a great place to see birds. The park was mainly bush with a river running through it. At various places they had bird feeders and seating to sit and watch the birds. We were probably a bit late in the day to see a lot of the action but we did see Green Jays which were just beautiful compared to the Toronto ball team's namesake. We also saw a couple of Chachalacas which are fairly large birds that looked kind of out of place walking through the tree branches. The ranger told us she saw a bobcat earlier in the day but we had no such luck. But it was a good ride and a nice day to be outside.

Sam went to play Pickle Ball while I headed to Harbour Freight (the American version of Princess Auto) to get some supplies to try and troubleshoot our furnace. It was acting up again so I thought I'd take a shot at it. we had trouble with it last year in Yuma, which ended up being a problem with oil contaminating the Propane system requiring a new regulator. It worked fine after that but this year on our way down one cold night it ran a couple of times and then wouldn't fire up again after that.

I also went to Lowes and picked up a Oxygenics shower head. Our RV has a water pressure regulator that caps the pressure at about 45 psi. The good thing about this is that it prevents damage to your plumbing if you hook up to a municipal water supply with very high pressure. Now, the bad news is that RV taps have very small orifices to reduce the amount of water that flows through them. This is great for conserving water when you're off the grid but it means you're showering with a trickle of water. The new head I bought was recommended by a lot of people on RV discussion boards on the internet so I figured it was worth a shot. Well, it's not firehose pressure but it is a vast improvement over what we had so any of you RVers out there with the same problem may be interested.

We hit the hot tub before dinner and ran into a couple from Winnipeg. Very nice people and he was a retired CP Rail policeman. We told him about seeing the CP Holiday train that came through Brighton in November just before we left and he knew all about it as it had been his job in the past to ride that train and take care of the performers. Small world.
