Ep.55 Against The Wind

20 January 2025 | Bonds Cay
Bill Bernaerts | Warm and windy
Our Australian Cat skipper left as we were hoisting anchor this morning at 6:45 and had no problem exiting the anchorage so much ado about nothing.

Did 20 nm on Friday and got anchored in Little Harbour Cay. We had 270° wind shelter as a bit blow as in the making. There is a cold front blowing through so we were happy to get to the anchorage early as it filled up throughout day with everyone looking to hunker down for the next couple of days. Went for a dinghy ride and saw a large sunken sailboat that had dragged anchor a couple of years back and was a blow ashore. When the salvage crew came and towed it off the shore it had a hole in the hull and proceeded to sink! all the more reason to seek shelter in a big blow. Stayed here for 2 days to ride out the wind.

20 miles on Sunday and anchored in a good anchorage with 270 degrees of coverage in Bonds Cay down the south east end of the Berry Islands. A big blow in progress with gusts up to 23 knots. We went for a dinghy ride in the afternoon and saw a couple of sharks, a stingray and a lot of turtles.

A bit rolly in the night but we were good. Anchoring in shallow Bahamian waters is pretty easy as you can see 40-50' down but we are anchoring in 10' of water. It's mostly sand except for some sea grass and the odd coral head. Abut, as luck would have it when we were setting our anchor we pulled it and 1 side of it wedged under a coral head.......we couldn't have done that if we tried! Not wanting to wrestle with getting that unstuck in the morning in the dark we reset it on Sunday night and it took some tugging from 3 directions to get it to release. But, we were ready for an early, before the sunrise, departure.
