Ep. 69 Funky Nassau

01 March 2025 | Rose Island (Nassau)
Bill Bernaerts | Perfect!
Left at 6 am from Rose Island on the east end of Nassau and had a strong opposing current to fight until we got through the cut. The depth drops off about a mile from shore and it appears to be almost a vertical drop down to several thousand feet in a very short time. This is the Tongue of the Ocean and the water colour changes from the shallow turquoise we're used to into an indigo colour. It really is beautiful!

Nassau is likely the busiest port in the Bahamas and you need to get clearance to enter the harbour. We elected to pass as we've had more than enough experience in our former boat visiting Toronto Harbour when we lived in Mississauga. We also appreciated not having a waterspout experience like we had back in January when we came through here from a Grand Bahama.

The crossing conditions were great with very light winds on the nose, meaning no sailing, but minimal waves with only gentle ocean rollers on the beam. Full on sun all day too and because we're heading north, it's behind us so no glare and sunburn to worry about. We managed to average just over 6 knots on engine power alone, which netted us a 10 hour trip to complete the 59.5 nm leg of the journey.
