Portsmouth, VA. To Broad Creek, NC
28 October 2016 | Donna and Jerry's House, Oriental, NC
Sunny, warm, winds NE 5-10
As we continue our way south the weather is beginning to feel much warmer. We left Deltaville, Va. on Sunday morning at dawn and arrived in Portsmouth, Va. around 2:30 in the afternoon. The winds were blowing 15-20 knots out of the West making for a very, as they say, “Salty Sailor” type of sailing conditions. The waves started out at 2-3 foot, but increased to 4 and 5. The waves were breaking over the bow of the boat covering the boat with lots of salt. At one point several waves went over the dodger. It was not what I would say “a relaxing sail”…. I can say that we were happy to pull into the ferry basin in Portsmouth, VA. That evening we walked up the street to a dinner theater where we watched “The Accountant”. We had a very relaxing dinner.
We left the next morning and headed to Great Bridge, VA. It got its name from the American Revolutionary War Battle of Great Bridge which took place on December 9, 1775 and resulted in the final removal of the British government from the Colony and Dominion of Virginia. Along the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) canal there is a nice park and a free dock for boats to tie up to. So, we tied up to the dock and waited for our friends Karen, Tim and their dog Poppy to join us. Once they got there we walked to a grocery store, bought some provisions and had a delicious spaghetti dinner on our boat.
The next morning, we continued down the ICW to Durant Island where we anchored and spent a very peaceful night. The following morning, we pulled anchor at sunrise and traveled down several creeks and rivers which finally led us to Broad Creek in Oriental, North Carolina. We are presently tied to a mooring ball in front of our friends, Jerry and Donna’s house, along with two other sailboats. Last night we all had dinner together and spent hours catching up with one another as we shared stories of our recent travels aboard out sailing vessels.
Oh, before I forget, Thank you! to all of my family and friends for sending me birthday wishes today. I am truly blessed to have all of you in my life.
