Back in La Ceiba

04 February 2011 | La Ceiba, Honduras
Capt. Z, sunny
Jan had a great month here in Honduras as the official photog of the boat--check out the pictres under the Honduras 2011 Gallery if you'd like. Drew is returning to the vessel after a nearly one year absence and will be aboard for a while. Current plan is to depart around 6 March when my visa expires and head to Belize to meet Susan and her group in late March. After that, it's still open to change--maybe sail back to Florida or put the boat up for the season in Guatemala's Rio Dulce.

Relaxing in Utila harbor

Capt. Z, partly cloudy
We are finally out of the Shipyard and have time to relax in Utila harbor. If you have any thoughts of escaping the cold up north, e-mail Capt. Z for details about a fun trip to paradise. Here are some of the shots from this week: January 2011 Pics

New paint job glistening in the rain

Capt. Z / Rainy and cool
Arrived at La Ceiba Shipyard this a.m. and was truly surprised when I saw the new topside paint job. All the non-skid areas were painted a tropical blue which makes the boat really pop without looking too busy. See the Gallery for more pics.

Trip to Copan Ruinas

08 June 2010 | Copan Ruins, Honduras
Capt. Z, sunny
Diana and I took an excursion to Copan in the mountains near the Guatemala border last week. I am adding a new album to the gallery with some pics that hopefully captured a little of the beauty of the area and its attractions. We stayed at Twisted Tanya's in the town. The restaurant and one-room hotel (but what a cool room) is run by the eponymous Tanya, and her husband Garnel. Tanya is also the hook-up for great travel advice via her other business, Copan Connections (www.copanconections.com).

Garnel does a great excursion to the Luna Jaguar Mineral Springs in the mountains. This was my favorite part of the trip--natural hot springs in a beautiful setting capped with a cooler full of fresh fruits and juices. Next we visited the McCaw Mountain bird park where many exotic birds have been rescued and rehabilitated. The park straddles a mountain river and the guided tours takes about an hour.

On the day of our departure we toured the Mayan ruins near town and really should have allowed more than the three hours we had. Our guide Fidel was informative and very entertaining, btw.

We took the Hedman Alas bus there and back for about $55 each roundtrip. The buses are far nicer than Greyhounds with a first class section in front for only $2 more!

Jade Seahorse

Check out the new gallery featuring the Jade Seahorse, a trippy place in Utila. I've also added photos to the "Honduras" album. The photo here shows me and Efrain, our caretaker and bueno amigo.
