First and last trip to Lasqueti
10 April 2007 | Pirate Cove, Decourcy Island
Morgan MacKay
Had a crummy couple days in False Bay. It rained and blew steady. Lots of noise from the boat as the wind rose and the swells moved in. Anchors held, but I didn't sleep. Would like to have left, but I was locked in by the weather.
I had a morning coffee onboard the ketch moored in the bay. A nice fellow who had done much sailing. Visiting with him and the locals at the pub were the only highlights of my stay on Lasqueti.
Got up with the sun on Tuesday and had the anchors up by 0830. Looked like it was going to be rough trip south. Had a beutiful heavy weather sail for about 20 minutes before the wind and sea shifted and died. I understand now why False Bay is such a hole to get stuck in. The weather comes off Vancouver Island between the mountains and funnels right into False Bay.
Motored south for a few hours Got some sails up off Ballenas Island and beated into Rainbow Channel (Nanaimo). Wind shifted and motored through Dodd Narrows to Decourcy. Anchored in Pirates Cove. About 6 hours enroute, mostly under power.
After anchoring, I went for a bike ride. Road out to the southern point, stoped and had a beer with the seagulls.
Pirate Cove is fantastic compared to False Bay. The wind is out there, but the water is calm like glass. The sun set has fantastic. As the sun set, it reflected off the water onto the sandstone. The rocks rippled yellow and red.
