Port London, Christmas Island

I arrived of the Port London, Christmas Island, Kiribati on the Morning of the 26th of June. Mostly Harmless anchored about 2 cables off shore of the main village. There is no safe harbour or "port" at Port London. Just a tramp steamer and two huge fish boats. This was my first visit to an atoll. The first day was spent checking into customs and immigration. While suffering major culture shock, I managed to get a phone call out to my parents using the only pay phone on the island at a cost of $30 in phone cards for about 5 minutes of voice while ants attacked my legs.
That night, another sailboat came in. In the morning, I went by to say hello. 'Waterhoen", skipperred by Alfred and crewed by Adva turned out to be the best company you could ask for. Alfred is a Dutch American Engineer that reminded me much of my grandfather, while Adva was a young Israeli adventurer. With Alfred's radio skills and Adva's cooking, Christmas Islands became a very nice break between legs.
The Port Captain, Sinwa was the most hospitable host to us. He shared his water and washing machine with us. On the last day, he insisted he take Adva and I on a scenic drive around the island. This has very much enjoyed and got us out of the dirty town to see the most beautiful open fields, beaches and coconut palms.
