Dismal Swamp and Elizabeth City
28 October 2008 | Elizabeth City
Rich /Stormy
Left Norfolk on the 26th for the trip through the Dismal Swamp. The lock you travel through was surveyed by George Washington and constructed with his slaves. This is a motoring activity and the passage is entered via locks at each end. The water depths are maintained at 6 ft. 2 in. and there are numerous hazards from logs, in the lock, or trees overhanging to snag the mast top. The boats are packed into the lock and once the canal is entered thay travel as a group. At the half way point there is a visitors center , which provides a convient location for tying up for the night and sharing travel stories. there is a contigent of 4 boats in our group from Canada they have been on the road since the latter part of July. The next morning all head out to the next convient anchor at Elizabeth City. Finally up to today 10/28/08. Wanted to leave today but gale winds with gusts up to 50 kn. so we'll do the customary things - look for fuel, look for water, look for beverages and look for food. Interesting reception in town - the mayor comes down to the free docks and invites all the boaters to free appitizers and wine/beer. Then gives you a history of the town and the location of the needed stores. There is also a group of elderly men that provide a "Rose Bud" service and will taxi you anywhere you need to go.
