Portage Des Sioux marina

03 October 2022

It’s Monday and the mast is up and we look like a real sailboat again! The crane got it in place around 11 AM but it’s 7 PM and Keith has worked all day getting the sails on and all the rigging connected properly. This Marina is in a flood zone (of the mighty Mississippi) the last big flood was 2019 where many homes were either totally rebuilt or demolished. The guys here were an incredible help, a wealth of information for the rest of our trip and we ate three meals together. Nice to have some socializing.
We need to get a couple hundred miles under R belt this week and hope the great weather continues. Venture On. K&B

Leaving the land of Lincoln

Today we left the Illinois river and started down the Mississippi! We have had no cell service for the last three or four days. Earlier in the week we were on a wall. We were the first to arrive but joined by nine others by the end of the night. I walked into town, I got my hair cut and went through a very nice Lincoln museum. It had a courtroom on the second floor that is still in the use. a beautiful piece of history. While I was gone, Keith had the opportunity to see a brand new tugboat Christened. the owner invited him aboard and he was so impressed!
We continue to see many Eagles, white pelicans and Asian carps. A friend of ours was in their little dinghy and one actually jumped in it. Yikes! Very slimy. We continue to see multiple barges. We saw several park Ed together alongside waiting to be taken into Dock. One place I counted over 50! Almost like a parking lot.
Alongside the river the past 20 miles or so we’ve seen several stilt houses, apparently summer homes.
We continue to have blue skies and sunshine. Temperatures do get down in the 30s at night but in the low 60s during the daytime and it’s very comfortable. The picture is at a very calm and peaceful anchorage. It’s taken two months from Sandusky to get to the Mississippi and we are headed to St. Louis. Venture On. K& B

Peoria Illinois

Good Monday morning! We have bright blue skies and 🌞 We spent the weekend at the city dock. Great place to walk around, farmers market Saturday morning and a very nice art show all weekend long.
We tried to leave the dock yesterday but we had very strong winds and we needed fuel. The problem that resulted getting diesel was we could not get into the gas pumps because of low water. Dragged a few times! After a couple hours the dock hand was willing to fairy our diesel out to us. With 18 to 20 knot winds n their 🚤 tied up to ours it was a little precarious dumping the diesel into our boat! Keith always figures out a way and doesn’t seem to get too rattled. So after six hours we went back to where we were docked Friday and Sat. That was a Episode!
We have about 150 miles left on the Illinois River. tons of barges and very industrial.Venture On K&B

Mid week temperatures were between 86 to 92 during the day. Plenty warm especially when you’re sitting in locks for a couple hours. The Illinois River continued to be busy with barges. Yesterday morning was 45° and we waited a bit for the fog to clear before heading out. We have mostly been anchoring or staying at free town Docks. Also have seen multiple Bald eagles and white pelicans. Venture On K&B

We did an overnight at Ottawa town wall arriving around noon yesterday. Again I went nine days without laundry/groceries. We walked a mile to a laundromat and ended up at the nicest/cleanest of all. Walking home stopped at a small locally owned grocery store. Beyond friendly. The owner insisted on driving us back to the boat! We ate dinner out last night and I use my YMCA tag to take a shower as we have no restrooms on the wall or portable water.
The Fox river flows into the Illinois in this town. Asian carp fish are voracious eaters n displace game fish. Many different agencies are trying to control them. In this harbor we saw multiple fish wildly jumping out of the water. They are big and once frightened go into a jumping frenzy!
Keith has worked all morning shoring up the boat and making phone calls trying to find someone to put our mast back up along the way.
. I’m sending a picture of Abraham Lincoln as President. They had several large painted wall murals. My favorite was of the 1st Douglas/Lincoln debate. this little town hosted back in the day 13,000 people attending (at the park where we were able to walk through.) History never ceases to amaze me. How did that many people get there on horseback and with no cell phones?
