Marsh Harbour, Abaco
29 March 2017
Paul and Helle
Another couple of weeks has already passed by.
From Staniel Cay we quickly moved up the Exuma chain then crossed to Spanish Wells, Eleuthera, where we stayed 4-5 day. We enjoyed this little place, toured around the settlement and Paul even got a haircut by Jenny, at the liquor store/pub, it was early in the day so it turned out nice.
Here we also had Bianca & Domenic, new owners of "Anglezarke"over for sundowners. Very nice younger couple, taking a sabbatical for 1 year.
From there we did an overnight crossing to Hopetown, Abaco.
We arrived before daylight at the Tilloo Cut, decided to wait until the sun was up before entering as it was very narrow entrance with reefs on both sides. In addition, quite a few shallow spots on the way into Hope Town Harbour.
Hope Town Harbour is a bit crowded with boats all on mooring balls. Took us awhile before a kind soul told us they were leaving, so we could take theirs.
Got settled and then met up with Carol & George Provost at their cottage "The Parliament House" with their porch overlooking the Harbour.
Carol & George showed us around Hope Town which is absolutely the prettiest spot we have yet to see in the Bahamas. It is very quaint, with small alleys between the beautiful small cottages surrounded by hibiscus bushes & trees, as well as tons of other flowers.
We spent a relaxing and fun week there, went for lunches, saw the little museum, which was very interesting as well, we climbed the famous lighthouse, still lit by kerosene, only one of two in the world. It is over 100 steps to get to the top of the lighthouse. The lighthouse keeper has to use a pulley system to get the kerosene container all the way up to the top of the lighthouse. Once you get to the top, you have a spectacular view of Hope Town.
This morning we took off for the "long" journey, 7 miles to Marsh Harbour where we are now anchored. This is a much more commercial Harbour. Tomorrow we will explore the town. Then next stop will be Man of War Cay, which we have been told is even nicer than Hope Town.
All the best from
Paul & Helle
