Field Trip

21 February 2011 | Great Exuma Island
Richard
Nicki and I went on a field trip to the high school (7th through 12th) on Great Exuma. The purpose of this field trip was to raise money for the local sports team to travel to other islands to attend sporting events. So, we were given a free bus ride to the school, where there was an open house and we were treated to a Bahamian meal of BBQ ribs, chicken or Grouper with rice, coleslaw and Mac&Cheese for a small donation to the cause.

This public school has about 500 students. We had about 2 hours to spend freely visiting the campus and talking to the kids and teachers. I have never experienced such a large group of well behaved kids in my life. And, at no time did a teacher or anyone have to remind a student of their manners or make any type of threatening gesture to force proper behavior. The students were naturally well behaved.

We know that Bahamian schools require uniforms. However, on this Friday, it must have been no uniform day.

Our visit was concluded with a brief concert by the band, which played some toe tapping Bahamaian songs.
