We had an easy sail to Guadaloupe. Oops, you can see our sloppy lines laying on deck.
Guadaloupe sounds Spanish, but is actually French. Very French. Almost no English.
Guadaloupe has a very well developed economy. They have their own agriculture, farming and industry. So, unlike St Martin that caters to tourists. Guadaloupe has no need for tourists and embraces their French culture. Oops, again, we didn't learn any French.
We had several uncomfortable encounters where our lack of French got in the way.
Nicki tried to purchase a Pineapple tart from a bakery. The lady looked at her and frowned and said something in French when she pointed and said "pineapple tart". We debated if her frown was because she didn't think that her pineapple tart tasted good, or she didn't like hearing English from her customer. But, Nicki pointed at a cake instead and after a few hand signals, we made the purchase.
I tried 3 times to purchase a local SIM card for my phone. I went to a phone store in Dashae. They directed me to another store across town which didn't sell phone cards. Odd. So, we rode the bus to Port a Petra. There were two competing phone stores within 100 ft from each other, but each of them directed me to the other once they realized I only spoke English. I gave up and didn't purchase a SIM card.
Needless to say, we just weren't feeling the love. But, to be fair, if a French speaker came to my home town in Texas, I doubt that they would feel the love either.
