Back on the Water

20 January 2011
Steve
January 20, 2011 Maybe this will be a good boating year. I was back out on the water yesterday helping a friend get his boat to a yard for hauling out. It was about a 4 hour trip north to Wormley Creek in fairly calm seas. Started out in moderate fog and a Navy warship next to us as we crossed the hampton road bridge tunnel. I hailed them on the radio to make sure they saw us, but we were not in the channel and easily stayed out of their way. Later on, a tugboat and barge was barreling towards us and elected to change our course as he was not going to change his. I believe in the rule "he who has the bigger boat makes the rules", and apparently he did too.

The only problem we had was entering the creek. As we motored into the York River, (big) his depth sounder decided to not display information so with me at the helm we entered the creek blind. At one point, the creek splits into two other channels but it was not clear when to make the turn. Unfortunately, we did not make the turn at the right spot and hit the mud. Luckily we were going very slowly and were able to reverse course and wiggle off the mud easily. Then it was to the fuel docks to top off the tank and to the lift for the lift out. Unfortunately, the yard was behind schedule so they are going to do the haul out today.

All in all, a great day to be on the water. It was foggy, then sunny with the sun shining. If you could get out of the breeze, it was quite comfortable.
