Astoria to Port Townsend

17 July 2007 | Port Townsend
The following morning of 7/15/07, Brittany and Mike hopped off in Astoria and we departed at 12:30pm for Port Townsend. Bon voyages were given by the Sisk and Hanson family who had made the trip out to Astoria to see us off.

Bob Martin, Paul Tevelette and Doug Sisk were gracious enough to assist us in taking the boat up the coast. Kent has sailed with Bob and Paul on many different boats and in many races over the years and it was reassuring to have the extra experience on board. Doug, Kent's father who is more familiar with a fishing boat than a sailboat immediately took to our boat and was handed the wheel within 5 minutes of leaving the Astoria moorage.

The Columbia bar crossing was quite uneventful - extremely calm waters took us out to sea where we turned right and headed north. The Pacific Ocean was abnormally calm, the wind light and the air temperature quite enjoyable.

At the north western point of Washington we leave the ocean behind and head into the Straight of Juan de Fuca. At this turn there is very scenic passage that you can take through the 'hole in the wall', which is an opening between Tatoosh and Cape Flattery. We begin to pick up speed in the Straight and quickly made our way to Port Townsend where we dropped anchor, 36 hours after leaving Astoria.

A big thank you goes to Bob, Paul and Doug for their company and assistance from Astoria to Port Townsend.

We'll remain anchored here for a few days (catching up a few boat projects and exploring the town) before we head towards our next stop, Whidbey Island.
