San Evaristo - Waiting out the Storms

03 December 2007 | San Evaristo
Heather
From La Paz we headed for Isla Espiritu Santos and Isla Partida which are approximately 20 miles north of La Paz and consist of 28 different coves. The 2 islands are 'joined' at Partida Cove where we spent 2 nights. Partida Cove is a well protected harbor with steep hillsides. It was quite peaceful to sit at anchor after the hustle and bustle of La Paz.

We spent an entire day in our kayaks exploring the shoreline and navigated between the 2 islands where there is a narrow sandbar to paddle through during high tide.

We then motored to the next cove over, El Cardonal where we took the dingy ashore to explore the mangroves and follow a trail to the windward side of the island. The island landscape was quite amazing to see close up, and it was much greener than either of us had expected to see in Mexico. The vegetation (ok, it was really just lots of cacti) was quite diverse and the landscape looked similar to Arizona.

The next day our friends on San Cles caught up with us and brought a spare impeller for our generator that had finally been delivered to La Paz. Getting anything delivered in Mexico (from the US) takes more time than it should and is subject to customs inspection. Despite the red tape we were grateful to have the part and be able to run our generator again (which allows us to top off our batteries, run the watermaker and enjoy hot water showers). Thank you to our friend Charles back in Portland for ordering the part online for us!

Next stop was San Evaristo to wait out some rather nasty weather (rain and 30+ wind gusts) that came from the south for a day and then from the north for 3 days. Luckily we traveled up from the islands with our friends on San Cles and Jammin. Having them around helped to break up the monotony of waiting out the bad weather.

The village of San Evaristo claims to have 200 residents but I think that was a rather generous count. Our first day here we went ashore before the bad weather hit to explore the village. Upon landing the dinghies we watched as 2 local fisherman carried a large shark out of their panga and up the beach (the vision killed my desire for snorkeling that afternoon). We proceeded through town, past a small school and out to the salt mining area (see picture of the salt mining at top of this blog). Before heading back to the boat we found a small store which was surprisingly well stocked with the basics but we failed to locate the woman who is rumored to make fresh tortillas for you as you wait ($1US for 2lbs of tortillas!). Pictures of our explorations in San Evaristo will be posted the next time we have internet access.

Winter has definitely hit the Sea of Cortez. We've seen quite a change in air and water temperatures the last month and have even gone back to digging out our fleece to wear in the evenings! Despite the cooler temps the plan is to push a bit farther north then head back to La Paz before making our crossing to Mazatlan.
