Flores

Well our bus trip to Flores is something we would rather forget about. We (along with a few people we met at the bus station in Guatemala City) got taken by a travel agency in Antigua. We specifically requested the highest end bus for the overnight trip to Tikal. We thought nothing of our tickets that were marked 'First Class' until we got to the bus station and found out that we should have been on the 'Luxury Class' bus. Needless to say the travel agency pocketed the extra money we gave them for the luxurious bus and we ended up on rather sketchy bus with no recourse. Let's just say that, you could see the road through the floor under the driver's gas and brake pedals where the rust had eaten away at the floor - that kind of sketchy. Kent now describes it as a glorified chicken bus, without the chickens (he called it a miriad of other names during the 8 hours). It was quite an experience, so much fun that instead of taking the bus back to Guatemala City the first thing Kent did when we got to Flores was purchase airplane tickets for us online for our return.
Flores (population 2,000) is a tiny island community that is on Lago Peten Itza (see picture above from our hotel room). A man made causeway connects Flores to the larger city of Santa Ana. There are a handful of restaurants and hotels in Flores that cater to those wishing to explore nearby Tikal. Tours and shuttles take tourists from Flores to Tikal each morning and drop them back off at their hotel when the park closes. Besides using Flores as a base to head to Tikal it doesn't seem to offer much else to do.
Today we are catching up on sleep and tomorrow we hit Tikal, one of the largest Mayan cities!
