Barefoot Cay Marina

We have been quite spoiled at Barefoot Cay Marina and Resort the last few days. The grounds are fantastic here, for example there is a large thatched palapa with hammocks and chairs built over a reef. You can snorkel right off the palapa and explore 2 small sunken boats. Dane saw a huge lobster but the reef areas are protected by the marine park in Roatan so there was no tasty lobster dinner for the 4 of us. The marina here has a dive outfit onsite so Steph, Kent and I decided to check out the famous Roatan diving. We were not disappointed. The first dive had lots of color, good visibility and tons of fish, but it was the second dive that we can't stop talking about. We basically dropped down 100 ft. into narrow canyons that crisscrossed along a huge underwater plateau. The canyons were almost totally enclosed by fans and other sea plants. It was pretty spectacular.
The only thing that Roatan could do with out are the sand fleas. No matter how we try to prevent from getting bitten we fail. We have 8 bug repellants on board all containing different varieties of ingredients and all 4 of us look like we have come down with a case of chicken pocks. Luckily the red itchy welts from the sand fleas tend to disappear after 36 hours and are not quite as large as mosquito bites but they are still rather annoying.
Roatan is pretty relaxed and certainly the hub of tourism. English is spoken more often than Spanish and most of the people who work in the tourism fields are young Americans. It is easy to see how someone could come here for a short term job but then never leave.
Tomorrow we leave the marina and if the weather is nice we plan to head to Guanaja, another of the Bay Islands.
The above photo is of Stephanie, 75 feet or so below the waters surface and saying hi to everyone.
