We just caught our biggest fish ever. Right at sunrise something started toying with one of our lures. It would hit it, then let go. It did it five or six times. When it would hit, I would free the line for a bit, then click the drag back on. Supposedly Marlin are notorious for this kind of play--now I believe the stories. I then saw fins sticking out of the water, and thought maybe I had caught something small which didn't pull line out (which makes a loud whizzing noise that we hear), and that this was now being eaten by sharks. So I reeled in the lure--nothing was there, just the lure. Then the fish hit one of our other lures and took it hard and fast. Moments later, a Marlin was jumping out of the water. I got everyone else up for some help, and it took me about an hour to get him in. He was huge--about the size of me. Amy, Stephen & Rivers say he was bigger than me. So we are guessing 150 to 200lbs. Good thing we have big fishing gear on good rigs. We ended up letting him go because he was too big to get on board, and I'm not sure what we would have done with him had we got him on board. Too much for the freezer. So while holding his bill in one hand I removed the hook with the other. I tried to lift him, but way way to heavy to lift while precariously perched on the back of the boat.
The wind has died so we have slowed to about 5kts SOG. COG is 271. Posn is 14d49m S 156d10mW.
All is well--except my arms which are now rubber.
