Arthur
We've been at sea for more than a week now. It has been a racous ride. The last couple of days has seen plenty of waves of 12 ft or more. Though the average has probably been 9ft. The waves have been short period wind waves as well. Not the gentle long period swells from storms far away. Yesterday while trying to fix the generator (imagine taking it to the fair and doing this on the tilt-a-whirl), we lost steering at our starboard rudder. Investigation showed that the end of the hydraulic ram that connects to the rudder arm broke. So we've been limping along with one rudder. We have steerage, but its weak, and the boat spins out in the waves about every 10 minutes or so. We will try to make repairs tonight when we get into the lee of a reef that is about 30 miles away at the moment. If we can't make repairs we will divert to Cairns Australia and abort the passage to Indonesia.... Despite the rudder problem, all is well. We are making bacon and egg sandwiches at t he moment. Position is 13-46S 147-00E. SOG about 7kts. COG 272 T.
