First Week

16 December 2010 | Key West,FL
Well, as of tomorrow, I've been here for a week. In that time I've landed a job as a deck hand on a tour boat which I start tomorrow. I got one audition as a performer at a bar so far and I'm starting to feel more like a local.

I'm finding that most club managers here see musicians as a nuisance that they would rather not deal with at all. Basically, they only have them so that they won't be the only bar in the immediate area that doesn't have "live entertainment." Consequently, once they have someone booked in there, they're satisfied. They can point and say "Look, live music. Come on in!"

I don't believe that they personally care one way or another whether the person is acutally any good because they don't think the customers care either, and there may be something to that. Don't get me wrong, there are some really good musicians playing down here but there are a lot of hacks as well.

It does something for your ego to be speaking to a manager in a bar, trying to be heard over the guy on stage playing an out of tune guitar and singing off-key and having the manager tell you that they've got their entertainment booked for the next several months. Really?!?

Oh well, when I came down here it was with three ideas in mind:
A.) Its warm! (mostly true)
2.) Its buzzing with tourist traffic so opportunities are there. (true)
C.) Ever since my first visit, I always thought it would be cool to live here. (true, so far)

I've met some really nice people and I'm excited about starting my new job tomorrow. Every day I get to see the beautiful turquoise water and I get to people-watch as I walk around Key West. Life is good. Here's a picture of Norma Fay in her Key West digs.
