.....Or maybe it was me rocking. At the risk of sounding like a perpetual whiner, Lake Erie definitely deserves it reputation for getting rough quick in windy conditions.
I can't say I wasn't warned. Everyone I knew who had sailed there had told me "When the wind kicks up, get the hell off the lake!"
Things started out ok but after about 4 or 5 hours the winds started to build, on the nose naturally. By the time they had been blowing 23 kts for a few hours, the waves kept building and building.
Eventually, they were slamming into the hull and rattling the rigging. Worse yet, I would lose 2 to 3 knots of boat speed everytime they hit... and I thought Lake Michigan had steep-period seas!
It finally got to the point where I couldn't find a comfortable heading so I thankfully retreated into the Grand River Marina in Fairport. *Whew* Not as far as I wanted to go but discretion being the better part of valor......I waived the white flag.
