Bay of Islands

22 September 2009 | Bay of Islands, Lou Group, Fiji
Author: Seth
Picture: The Bay of Islands anchorage viewed from the look-out point that our new friends at the nearby plantation took us to.

Our cruising guidebook - which, by the way, is terrible - said that the Bay of Islands anchorage was one of the finest in the South Pacific. That's quite a claim as we've seen some amazing anchorages, but for once our book was right. We pulled into the Bay of Islands and after negotiating through a few of the more than 50 mushroom shaped islands we found a small and secluded space large enough for just a single yacht. Around us on all sides were these small, boat sized, "islands" that created a maze of undercut cliffs with vines hanging down into the sea. Adding to the beauty was the feeling of complete solitude. There was not a man made structure in sight, just the limestone and coral cliffs of the up-raised islands. It was the kind of place you want to share with as many people as you can - but we found ourselves alone in boating paradise for two straight nights.

THIS, is what cruising the south pacific is all about.
