Tsunami Okay

29 September 2009 | Mana Island, Fiji (west coast)
Author: Seth
Picture: Tsunami Zone and time periods to impact. Honeymoon was within the three hour time radius, 620 miles away from the epicenter.

This is just a quick entry to let everyone know that we are okay and that we were not affected by the reported Tsunami (thanks to those who sent us emails). All we know is that at 17:48 UTC (6:48am Fiji) an 8.0 magnitude earthquake occurred 620 miles away from our location near American Samoa. Shortly thereafter a Tsunami was witnessed in Pago Pago and Apia, American Samoa (at 18:25 and 18:32 UTC).

After hearing about the confirmed Tsunami we headed out of Musket Cove in search for deeper water with several other boats as a warning was issued by fellow cruisers on VHF 16. Given our westerly location we were probably okay, but deemed it safer to find deeper water. After a couple hours we pulled into Mana Island and learned that the Tsunami had reached Rarotonga, which was 775 miles away from the epicenter. This should mean that the Tsunami has now passed our location, although we are being cautious of aftershocks and subsequent waves.

For now, all is well aboard Honeymoon (and our buddy boats La Palapa, Victory Cat, Flashback and others). Quite and exciting time for our parents who are visiting though! More to come...
