A Maxi Sydney Welcome

Picture: A Maxi Racing Yacht screams past Honeymoon on our maiden voyage into Sydney (and at this point they were not even racing!).

We made it! 15,000 nautical miles later we arrived in Sydney, Australia! And we could not have timed our entry any better either. It just happened to be a major race day on the harbor with the Australian boat Wild Oats taking on the New Zealand boat Alfa Romeo.

At over 100 feet in length, the maxi boats are a true sight to see in action. Both boats sailed within feet of Honeymoon in the pre-race warm up and it was amazing how quiet the crew were as they tacked and jibed around the bay. Everyone on board knew their job and not a word was needed to be said. All I can say is that this is not the way things have worked on Honeymoon! We're not a total disaster, but it was a good reminder of what separates the amateurs from the pros. You can sail across an ocean and still be an amateur, that's for sure!

In the end it was Alfa Romeo who pulled off the victory when the local favorite, Wild Oats, wine glassed their spinnaker on a downwind leg. But if it had not been for that one mistake it could have been anyone's race after a full hour a sea. It is going to make their rematch on Boxing day another memorable sight for us (we plan to be on the starting line for the Sydney Hobart race).

After the race we tucked into a bay off Taronga Zoo and had a full view of the city sky line, the harbor bridge and the iconic opera house - a picture perfect view of the city. And yesterday we moved into Blackwattle Bay on the west side of Darling Harbor and have been exploring the city by foot like two kids in a candy store.

What a great city! What a great trip...
