When sailing around the world it is inevitable that one will find themselves in a particularly notorious and horrible part of the world's oceans. These conditions usually arise where the current is contrary to the prevailing wind resulting in extremely treacherous seas and weather conditions. These places cannot be avoided and are usually rewarded with better conditions elsewhere in your voyage, but for the short period that you sail in these waters you find yourself seriously reconsidering your reasons for being there. The only good news about these passages are that you are pretty much guaranteed a horrible experience so you know exactly what to expect and can plan for it before you get there.

Our passage from Bonaire to Panama was one such passage, and in order to reward ourselves with good conditions in the Pacific it would mean crossing the Caribbean Sea in February. So with expectations low, we sailed our perfectly engineered lightning rod into the Colombia Passage, en-route to the isolated islands of San Blas, Panama...
