Private Anchorage

Picture: A private anchorage on Tahuata

Unimpressed by the Atuona anchorage in Nuka Hiva, we left on a two hour sail south to the island of Tahuata with unknown expectations. We really wanted to go directly to Fatu Hiva, but it was too far a sail and we decided to break it up by staying one night in Tahuata - and thank god we did!

As you can see in the picture above, we found an amazing anchorage just north of Hanamoenoa Bay, the recommended anchorage in all the guide books. We took a chance by exploring the uncharted bay, but it paid off in spades. The anchorage was in about 20 feet of sand, perfect for our anchor. We had plenty of room to swing as we had it all to ourselves. And since there was no other boaters or a river coming from the island the water was crystal clear. So when we dropped anchor we all jumped in the water and headed for our own private beach. Tim hunted for fruit trees (as he always does - must be those long arms) and Elizabeth and I hunted for new fish with our snorkel gear. And about an hour into our snorkel we came across a small black tip shark. Scary, yes, but very timid for sharks and reported to be safe to swim near. Just to be sure, we kept our distance and I noticed Elizabeth was always keeping me between herself and the shark. Apparently being shark bait is a wedding vow, she explained later...

We were sad to haul anchor the next day, but Tahuata far exceeded our expectations.
