Sailing St. Simons Sound

30 December 2009 | St. Simons Sound
James
St. Simons Sound with the SSI Lighthouse & Pier, Jekyll Island, and new Sidney Lanier Bridge provides a picturesque setting for day sailing. The Sound is frequently used by container ships, sailboats, shrimp boats, and local fishermen.

Golden Isles Marina on the Frederica River provides an excellent deep-water stopover for transient vessels of all sizes. Jekyll Harbor Marina and Brunswick Landing Marina are also conveniently located for long and short term dockage.

The Sound contains many sandbars making careful navigation a must, but there is plenty of open water for cruising, day-sailing, and regattas. Normal tidal swing is around 6 feet so the current in the main channels can play havoc with the course and SOG for the unaware skipper.

Jekyll Island, Georgia Labor Day 2003

01 September 2003 | Jekyll Island, Georgia
James
An easy day trip from Golden Isles Marina or Brunswick Landing Marina is to the Historic District of Jekyll Island. The island was once private with exclusive limited membership consisting of many of the world's wealthiest families at the time, most notably the Morgans, Rockefellers, and Vanderbilts.

These families built Jekyll Island Club and operated it for over a half century until the island was purchased by the State of Georgia in 1947. The Historic District has been completed restored and the Club is a popular resort destination for today's travelers. History of Jekyll Island

There are two docks and one marina serving the island. Jekyll Harbor Marina offers the best boating accommodations and has an excellent restaurant, but is a short walk from the Historic District.

Jekyll Wharf is conveniently located to the Historic District and also has a restaurant, but limited boating amenities.

If you are passing through the area or staying awhile Jekyll Island is a must stopover. A word of caution is that Jekyll Creek should not be navigated at low tide unless you are in a canoe. The northern entrance to Jekyll Creek is guarded by a stone jetty that is not visible at high tide, but is well marked. The southern entrance requires negotiating St. Andrews Sound, which is notoriously shallow. Follow the channels and approach preferably at high tide and you will be find.
