Hukilau Sails the Sound

Jennifer Visits

05 June 2011
Our niece Jennifer came to visit this weekend, and she is a boater from way back, so we thought a sail would be a good idea. Jennifer has never been on Hukilau before and hadn't been sailing since summer camp but was happy to go.

The weather cooperated, and was sunny and breezy. In deference to Lily and Jennifer, we only used the genny to reduce healing. Its still spring and the ladies all wore sweatshirts in the breeze. We unfurled the sail in the harbor and had to tack once to get out into the Sound. We set a course upwind to the southeast.

We sailed almost to the Thimbles before we turned around to head back. When we got to Rocco's Breath Island (I wonder what it's real name is?), the wind died down quite a bit and we slowed to about 2 or 3 knots. Patti was getting cold, so we fired up the engine (still no battery!) and motored back. Of course the wind piped up as we were docking, but we made it with no problems to speak of.
