Labor Day Weekend
03 September 2013
We had plans to go sailing on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend; according to the weatherman, it looked like the best opportunity. However, on Friday, the reports had been revised and things looked grim. So Patti told me to go out after work on Friday to make sure that I got some time in.
I left work "early" (and made the mistake of checking my email before going out and wound up talking with Jill for a half hour before getting away from the dock), and was able to leave the dock by about 5. Winds seemed a bit light, but I was determined. High clouds were moving in, the sun was low, but it was still a pleasant night. The tide was flowing and it was almost high, so I cut the corner near the Little Mermaid and raised sail in the harbor. Winds were light and I was making only about two knots. It took two tacks to get past Taunton Rock, but out in the Sound, the winds gradually increased. Once I was out about a mile, the winds were fabulous and I was hitting 5 knots + easily. However, it was going to be twilight soon so I headed back about 6:30, and had the boat tied up by 7 or so.
The weather for the rest of the weekend was crappy; thunderstorms, showers and generally hot and sticky all weekend. I decided to finish the new hatchboards on Monday. A couple of finishing cuts (including the vent cut out), then I put two coats of paint on them. Because it was so humid and I was painting in the garage, it took all day to let the paint dry enough to put on the second coat. I hope to be able to install them soon. I am doubly hoping that the trim cut I put on the lower board wasn't too severe and its still "big" enough to fit in the slots.
Joel, Diane and Howard will be in this weekend, so maybe I'll have a chance to sneak over to the boat when I see them. Otherwise, we're pretty busy over the next few weekends, including Rachel's wedding.
