A New Season
26 May 2007
Well, its about that time. I really wanted to get Hukilau in the water before the end of May, and I did it. We had one really nice weekend after about a week of cold and rainy weather. It took everyone by surprise, especially the yard. Even though there were tons of people there to work on their boats, neither the water or electricity was on yet.
Most of us made do; I took the shrink wrap off the boat and touched up the bottom paint. I really came to wash and wax the topsides, but of course I couldn't do that without the water or juice. It was really a last minute thing that I even bought along the paint and brushes.
Four hours later, Hukilau's topsides were as shiny as they have ever been. I use the West Marine brand one-step compound and wax. Not for the purist to be sure. But it's all I really have time for.
The boat went in the water on Tuesday. On Wednesday, I brought the sails with me to work, hoping to steal some time during lunch to get at least one of them on. Didn't happen. I planned to do it then on Thursday evening, but the Admiral had other thoughts, the kids had sports, and I gave up.
Of course, she is the Admiral for many reasons, one of them being she indulges my obsession. She tells me to go to the boat on Friday night. The weather is supposed to be nice and I should enjoy myself. Ok!
My friend from work Scott (who loves sailing and wants to buy his own boat) volunteers to help me bend on the sails after work. With his assistance, we get the sails on, the battery installed and various other jobs done in two hours.
The weather really is beautiful, we are on a sail boat, so we decide to go sailing. The cabin is a mess, the cushions are still in my basement along with the porta pottie, but we have a functional craft, so off we go.
Winds are from the SE at about 12 knots. We get some really nice sailing in, but the wind dies. Then comes back. Then dies. Then comes back. We mutually decide that our shakedown cruise is a big success. The shrouds still need tighening, the cotter rings need replacing, and I am pretty sure the Admiral won't step aboard until the cabin has been washed down, but I am pleased.
I hope we get another chance to go sailing this long weekend, but I doubt it. Plans for this summer: an overnight trip to Cedar Island in Clinton.
