Down for the Winter
13 November 2020
The boat was hauled and winterized, probably later in the week of October 19.
I was curious to see how my new prop treatment had fared. Recall that when I had someone apply PropSpeed last fall, the prop and shaft were covered in barnacles by the end of the season. So based on some internet recommendations, I tried using zinc spray paint. About 1/20th the price of the PropSpeed.
So when I went to the boat to check to see if she had been pulled for the year, I found Hukilau already shrinkwrapped (nice), but the prop and shaft had barnacles; about as many as when treated with the PropSpeed. Maybe it needs more than one coat of spray paint? I'll try that next spring. If the $11 can of spray paint did as well as the $200 PropSpeed, why change?
I also needed to get my handheld VHF off the boat; I forgot to take it with me before, and I didn't want to leave it there for months without charging it. While I was there, I also emptied the damp-rid containers of water and added more flakes.
I also had the yard remove my batteries; I need them so I can turn them in for recycling when I buy new batteries in the spring. Do I install the new ones myself? I'm guessing yes, but we'll see.
Big plans for a cruise next summer!
