Marsh Harbour
09 January 2009
We travelled to Marsh Harbor yesterday on the Great Abaco Island. It is the biggest 'town' we have visited yet. There was actually a stop light. It is one of the best places to provision the boat. We went to Price Right, food is still expensive but it was the most similar store to a home grocery we have seen. We have restocked the boat. We also picked up some speaker wire and some presents for Brie's birthday. Marsh Harbor is a busy port but a seemingly poor city. The unemployed hang out on street corners and talk to passersby. There is a lot of trash strewn, vacant buildings and everyone honks their horn constantly. Coming from the quiet solitude and peaceful villages we have visited it is very different. Once we have our supplies we did happy hour at the Jib Room, where we meet Chad and Leann (Cambration), they are from Michigan, but sailing through the islands to their wedding further down the chain on Staniel Cay in Eluethera. We meet John and Yvonne (Speranza), she is a gorgeous Dutch lady and he is from New Jersey. I guess opposites do attract! We are sleep at 8:30 and leave early in the a.m.
1-9-09 We stopped at a big rock with a few palm trees called Fish Cay. The water there is crystalline blue and the big kids, including Dave, snorkel. We have (he has) added two more conchs to our larder and he learned how to clean one in about ten minutes. We had lunch there and moved on to Treasure Cay. We have a day and a half of school to make up so we have not visited the town yet. We filled the gas tank and the water tank and finally washed all the salt water of the boat. For a just a little while she will be clean and that feels good. We had drinks with Gerry and Alan from Maine on "Civil Twilight". They are very nice and funny as can be. Nearly everyone we have met is very pleasant. At Treasure we have wifi, we can get laundry done for $8 a load and someone else does the work! This will be way better than loads in a bucket. There is a beach, a pool and a bar - we will visit them all.
Everyone is well and we are still having a great time.
