21 January 2009 | Exuma Sound
We are leaving Exuma Land and Sea Park (Warderick Wells) and sailing to Compasse Point Marina. A strong cold front is coming and we will appreciate the protection from the wind as well as nice warm showers. Hopefully there will be wifi there, the Exumas are not nearly as settled as the Abacos or even Eleuthera. We have yet to see any sort of village or town for that matter. There are however a number of abandoned, storm ravaged and otherwise destroyed old houses.

We stopped in Rock Sound and got some shopping done. We were running low on the important things like t-shirts, rum and groceries. We went to the Blue Hole. This is an inland cave that connects to the ocean and is tidal. There are fish that just wait to be fed. A guy stopped us on the street to play the harmonica for us. It is pretty cool. We had lunch with a bunch of other cruisers Civil Twilight, Midwatch, Smiles, at Sammy's Café. They had good burgers and wifi.

We crossed the Exuma Sound, this is a bay, but it is a mile deep in places. Civil Twilight caught a 5' sailfish, after fighting it for a while and watching it leap into the air, it broke the line and was gone. We caught an 18" black grouper on a hand line, this is a light white fluffy fish - yummy. Then Colton spotted some fins and shouted "dolphins, but they're huge!" Fins yes - dolphins no. It was a pod of whales. 5-6 Minke Whales as near as we can tell, maybe Pilot whales, but who would know the difference and does it really matter? They followed us for a little bit, blowing as they went, then they dove and we never saw them again. That was really cool.
