Long Island Breeze

06 March 2009 | Long Island, Bahamas
We pulled out of George town yesterday about 10am. We had a beautiful
sail at about 8 knots. Brie sailed with a family from NY on their
catamaran, Shining Time. They have a 15 yr old daughter - Alunaand two small boys, Owen and Zuber. The kids
all get along very well.Head line news: we crossed the Tropic of Cancer this day at 23.27 degrees latitutude north. Not too exciting but a major land mark!!!
Today we rented a mini van to land tour this 80 mile long island,
hense the name Long Island. We went to another blue hole. This one is
ocean side and is nearly 680 feet deep. The world record free dive was
done hear. We all jumped off the adjacent cliffs into the very deep
water. Brie jumped the highest from about 50 feet. It was amazing! We drove the south end of the island with old churches and a tiny
settlement.

We toured the Hamilton caves with Mr. Cartwright. He speaks with a
thick Bahamian accent and doesn't really know all that much about
caves or the caverns formations. But the sights were very cool anyhow.
Great big cave rooms with skylights, thick tree roots, bats,
stalactites and mites and tidal water underground. He and his family
use the caves as their own personal hurricane shelter. All in all it
was a great day.
We ended it all with a buffett dinner homemade by Triphenia. Yummy.
Tomorrow we will tour the north end where Christopher Columbus alledgedly landed on his 1492 voyage.
Will send this as soon as I get a signal. Triphenias has exceptional
wifi so I will go bye there soon.
3-6-09 We are still in Long Island, Bahamas, Not NY. It is sunny and warm here no snow to be seen. Yesterday we toured the north half of the island seeing the Columbus Monument, which was like any other monument only this one sat on a limestone bluff overlooking the landing Columbus made in 1492 with a 270 degree view of the sound and the ocean. Then we toured the ruins of a colonial era plantation. Mostly is was stone foundations, but cool none the less. We had dinner on Shining Time a 53' catamaran from NY. They are also a family of five, with a teenage daughter and two little boys. I added new pix to my facebook if you want to look. I also got a skypephone number, so if I happen to be online you can call me or you can also leave a voicemailo. This is the number that will show up on caller ID now 240-949-2455.
