First day at sea
30 March 2016
Departed Puerto Los Cabos at noon Tuesday, raised the sails and headed due South. After motor-sailing for 2 hours, we shutdown the D-sail for some brisk sailing. By late afternoon, we had 25-30 knots of wind on the beam, accompanied by some gnarly seas that were occasionally depositing green water in the cockpit. What an introduction to ocean sailing again! After all the awesome fish tacos we ate in Mexico, a power bar for dinner was good enough. As dusk approached, we put in a second reef to settle the boat down with the genoa only 1/4 unfurled. By midnight, the wind had thankfully abated to the high teens, and eventually the waves subsided as well.
We are currently sailing a rhumb line for the Marquesses Islands at 220 degrees (magnetic) at 7.5 knots, with 15 knots of winds. This is more Westerly, and more velocity than the latest GRIB files forecast. The last two days have been overcast, but we're still getting 13 amps of solar power and another 12A from the Hydrogen, so we have plenty of reserves in the lithium batteries.
We just finished our 24 run, and logged 170 nm since we departed Del Cabos. Our current position is; 20.25.400N, 110.48.500W. Life is rolling on Huzzah!
