Summer 2008
06 September 2008 | NYC, Long Island, CT and MA
Rick
I hate to keep apologizing every time I write a blog, but I must. It has been so long since we have posted anything. This week I received a text message from my son telling me it was way past due.
I figured this was the best time to write. We are currently anchored in Great Kills Harbor on the South side of Staten Island NY. Tropical storm Hanna has started down upon us and we are here sitting it out. Yesterday the port of NY called the boat and told us to leave the 79th Street Marina and to seek safer shelter. We had already planned on doing that.
Our last blog was from Cumberland Island Georgia. Since then we ran up the coast to get out of the 100 degree heat in the Carolinas and Virginia. We pushed up in to NY and the Long Island Sound for the summer. Where has all the time gone? We got as far as Cape Cod in August for a small family reunion. We met in Harwich Port for 4 days. Both of my sister and all of our children attended and we had a ball. At one time we had 11 people on the boat for a day sail to Nantucket. We stayed way to long and arrived back into the very crowded port at about 9:30 PM for a hair rising arrival. No hits, no runs and no errors and we all had a blast.
While in Harwich port we celebrated my brother in law Jerry's 70th birthday with a fine dinner in a nice restaurant. I can't believe he is 70, he still acts like he's 29. The day before everyone left we had a superb dinner prepared by Chef Adam. He cooked 4 pounds of mussels, 2 dozen oysters and about 30 clams for dinner. It was delicious and ended up being the best sea food dinner of the summer.
We saw Newport RI for the first time and I loved it. I even had Jimmy Buffet paddle his surf board by the boat. I should have gotten out the camera for that one. While we were there they had the Folk festival and he was the headliner. Our dear friend Carol from the 1970's came and visited while we were in New Port. I met Carol in Caribou Maine when we had side by side apartments.
Other places we stopped this summer and not necessarily in this order were: Woods Hole MA, Martha's Vineyard and Block Island, Mystic CT, the Thimble Islands CT, Port Jefferson NY, Port Chester NY, North Port NY, Port Washington NY, Manhattan and I'm sure I forgot a few.
While we were in Cape Cod the weather got rather cool. It was the signal for cruisers to start their migration south. Because of the storm season we will not be in a big hurry to get south too soon. Our goal is to be in West Palm Beach by the 3rd of November so we can vote. If you wonder which way I lean; GO OBAMHA
We have learned not to make plans but do make goals. After we spend about a week in South Florida we hope to head off into the Bahamas and eventually down in to the Caribbean for the winter.
