May 22 - Sandy Hook to Long Island Sound

Sandy Hook to Long Island Sound (Linda again)
Despite the lack of sleep, everyone was up around 8.
But before we left I had to go in swimming. I love swimming. To me a vacation isn't a vacation unless swimming is involved. So, I took a quick dip in the cold - but oh so refreshing water - before we left.
We got underway around 9, hoping to catch the current going out through Hell's Gate into the Long Island Sound. How neat to go under the Verrazano bridge, and then to catch sight of the Statue of Liberty in the distance and the Manhattan skyline! We took lots of pictures. We also sailed past Ellis Island where my grandfather came to in the early 1900s from his native Lithuania. My mother tells me that the family donated a 'brick' in the new structure in his name.
And then Manhattan. It's got to be one of the coolest things in the world to sail around Manhattan in your own sail boat!
We stopped at the North Shore Yacht Club for the night where we took wonderful long, ht showers and did a load of laundry.
