May 24th, 09 - Port Washington NY to Port Jarvis, NY
We spent two nights at the North Shore Yacht Club in Port Washington. I do not think I have found a nicer bunch of real people. They are as good as the Camden ME Yacht Club - and they rate a perfect ten with me! (Thanks Mike and Bonnita for the advice)
The photo is the club in the morning mist as we left for Port Jarvis
A very easy and nice motor (of course the wind was on our nose - what's new??)
Lovely day, everything went very well. Except - when we got into Port Washington, the Yanmar would not idle well, died at slow RPMs, Ugg! That is not a good thing. To go from forward to reverse (reverse is the brakes) you have to go through neutral - read "slow RPMs". So - Doug and I thought it might be a fuel filter clogging up. There is one thing diesel engines must have - and that is clean fuel. On examination we noticed that the glass fuel bowl at the bottom of the RACOR filter was half full of black sludge. One unknown of buying a used boat is "how clean is the fuel tank?" We had some pretty choppy seas coming up the coast of New jersey, and I figured if it was going to clog up - that would be when it would happen. We totally dismantled the filter, cleaned it to spotless, refilled it with diesel, replaced the filter element and the two "O" rings, bled the system and all was a go. She has worked flawlessly since.
Port Jefferson was OK - we anchored. Lots of boats as it is a long weekend down here.
Got there about 3 pm. It was nice and warm and I spent the next hour re-building the head. Fun job, but now the head works perfectly. I wonder what is next?
