Towards Stanley

26 September 2010 | Puerto Williams, Chile
Chris
We finally got away from Puerto Williams on Friday afternoon after we let some breeze blow through. The trip east out of the Beagle Channel was smooth and very beautiful as it was lit by the evening sun. We caught the tide right at the Le Maire Straights and rocketed through there at 12 knots, at times. At the north end of the straight a weak tidal current was against us that stood the sea up and made things a bit choppy. The breeze made sure that the seas stayed choppy for the next 12 tours or so dropping away to nothing in the middle of Saturday night. As I write this at 9:30 on Sunday morning we are about 100 miles WSW of Sealion Island with another 80 or so miles to Stanley from there. We are motoring in a flattening sea at the moment with a little bit of a counter current and only making five knots over the ground. There is not a lot of wind in the forecast so the trio could be slow from here on in.

We have had Peals dolphins with us periodically, in the straits there were a lot of albatross but here the only birds we have for regular company are Cape Petrels, but they are beautiful birds so that is no bad thing. I heard whales blowing when I was on deck furling the yankee last night but couldn't see them. We saw two trawlers last night and a large container ship earlier yesterday but other than that all is quiet.

More when we get to Stanley. Chris, Julie, Wayne.
