Good miles in the fog

Day two of the circumnavigation attempt dawned clear and calm, but offshore lurcked an onimous looking cloud bank that drifted ashore as fog that stayed with us for most of the day. The paddlers departed Hurcules bay at about 6am and Pelagic sailed from Husvik harbous soon after.

Thick fog made it difficult for Pelagic to maintain close contact with the paddlers so filming opportunities were not frequent. However the fog thinned as the kayakers passed in front of the snout of the Fortuna Glacier giving Matias an opportunity for some shots. Shortly after that the kayakers stopped for lunch in a, beautiful, small unnamed cove, the fog cleared allowing Pelagic to anchor in the cove and the crew to join the paddling team on the beach for lunch.

The paddlers are totally self contained, carrying all of their food for the whole trip with them, and have some excellent freeze dried food that has been prepared by Sigrid. Thier lunches are simpler commercial freeze dried meals in bags, just add water. The spot on the beach where we had lunch was just a small gap between fur seal territories just wide enough for the four kayaks to be drawn above the surf line. Sharing the beach with the fur seals were the seemingly ever present elephant seal weaners and some king penguins.

After lunch the kayakers paddled to Elephant Lagoon in Cook Bay and Pelagic anchored just a mile away in Prince Olaf Harbour's North bay. Distance for the day - a little over 17 miles.

Today's photo is of Sigrid apparently very pleased with the choice of lunch stop.
