Chris
Today was a big day for the paddling team, they covered 17 miles (31.5km) against a stiff head wind, and rounded the western end of the island. They departed from their camp at Cape North at 7am and reached camp at Johan Harbour at about 17:00. We had a somewhat easier day on Pelagic, departing our anchorage at 11:00 intending to catch up with the kayakers before they reached Bird Sound, but they were a little too quick for us and had just slipped through the sound when we arrived.
We dropped Matias ashore so that he can camp with the paddlers and gather some material of what it is like to camp on a cramped beach with a lot of feisty fur seals. They guys were happy with their days work, their toughest so far, buzzing with the experience of kayaking through the big swells and breaking rocks in Bird sound. Their faces were caked in salt and they certainly looked like they had had a hard day in a kayak. They are in good spirits and happy.
After dropping off Matias and picking up some batteries for the teams video cameras for recharging on the yacht we moved Pelagic to an anchorage in Coal Harbour just across the bat from Johan Harbour.
The weather doesn't look so great for the next few days with some stiff breezes coming our way, but at least the breeze is in a good direction now that we are onto the southern side of the island so fingers crossed that it won't be too windy to paddle.
The photo of the day continues the theme of crew photos from the last couple of days and is one that Julie took of me, looking very unimpressed at the gaggle of sheathbills hovering over my head as we approach the anchorage at Salisbury Plain. Julie thought the birds mobbing the boat as we came in there was amusing at first but when she saw how disgusting their poo is she soon changed her mind!
