Wet and Windy

18 November 2010 | 54 02.44'S:37 56.45'W, Coal Harbour, South Georgia
Chris
Pelagic is still in Coal Harbour this evening. The weather overnight (the 17th/18th) had been windy so Matias got a good introduction of the discomforts of life on the beach as they had to get up in the night to put extra guys on the tent. The wind combined with the animal noise from the beach can't be condusive to a good night's sleep! The fur seal females have started to arrive on the beaches in the last 36 hours or so and are giving birth so the sound of babies crying has been added to the growls, grunts and barks of the seals, the howls of the albatross, and the trumpeting of the king penguins.

Visibility was very poor this morning but had improved slightly by mid morning. The wind had also dropped so the kayakers decided to leave their camp and try to push on. They hadn't got very far when they encountered high breaking seas (check out the photo that should be on their blog very soon taken from Tormond's helmet cam!) and had to turn back. They are now camped on a small beach in Coal Harbour not far from Pelagic.

Our photo of the day shows the rugged coastline to the west of Cape Paryadin.
