007 Driving

24 November 2011 | 100 miles south of the Falklands
Chris Harris
Leaving Stanley was for me something or a relief. We had quite a work load to get through while we were there, but Magnus and I were very successful in knocking a lot of entries off the jobs list.

It's always good to visit friends and family at home as I don't spend much time with my feet actually on dry land there these days. Even so I was a bit slow and missed out a few people (Sorry!) I'll be missing Christmas at home this year too, and my sister visiting from London where she now lives; which is a pity as it's a few years since we managed to be on the same continent at the same time. I'm sure Christmas with the other charter boat crews will be a lot of fun though!

007 Driving - This afternoon we set up our old Fleming wind-vane system and it now has the helm. The wind-vane has been with the boat for years but the years of wear and tear were starting to show so at the end of last season I took it off and put it on 'Pelagic Australis' in the Falkland Islands to be delivered to Cape Town. We usually refit 'PA' in Cape Town; which is where the boss 'Skip' lives. In Cape Town I took the Flemming up to Marco Grandi of Grandi Manufacturing www.grandi.co.za, who always makes and repairs a lot of custom parts for both Pelagics; Marco rebuilt the wind-vane and it was loaded back onto PA for the trip back to the Falklands where we have just collected and reinstalled it. The original manufacturers offered to rebuild the unit for me but that would have meant getting it from the Falklands to Australia and back again - not so easy!

We are not sure if the wind-vane has ever had a name, but we think that it should be something connected with Flemming, so for the moment it's 007 - suggestions via comments on this post please.

Magnus and Thomas are off-watch and sleeping now. I'm making a toastie on the trusty Refleks cabin heater as I write this, while nipping upstairs every few minutes to look around the horizon. I can monitor the boats performance from the Nav station, but there is nothing like a mark one eyeball checking the horizon for ships, ice, whales, squalls, etc.. you just never know there might be some treasure floating past in the form of a lost fender or something too !

Anybody out there got favourite toasted sandwich recipes?
