Bienvenidos a Mexico
28 November 2006 | Ensenada
Linda
After a great four day stay at the San Diego YC (the most family oriented club I've seen yet) we set sail for Mexico on Sept. 5. Again winds were so light that we motor sailed the whole way in order to make it to Ensenada during daylight hours.
Our first stop in Ensenada was at the fuel dock. Talk about a difference in fuel costs. Back in Victoria we were paying around $5/gallon, here it was less than $2/gallon. After meeting the fuel attendant and not being able to converse with him Johnathon declared his wish to learn Spanish, Great!
Impossible is now at a well secured marina where she is waiting for our return in December.
From my point of view perhaps the most memorable part of the voyage (aside from the 30 hour gale off the Oregon coast) from Victoria are all the friendly and helpful people we've met. From the Settlemier's and Munro's from the St. Francis YC (we met up with the Munro's in Morro Bay and sailed together to Santa Barbara) to the family with 2 children on the 50 ft catamaran we met in Morro Bay, to the ever so friendly lady at the West Marine store in San Diego who personally drove me to another West Marine just so that I could buy some necessary charts, to the other cruisers we met in Ensenada. In particular Ivan, Vesna and their crew TJ (sailed non stop from Vancouver). We had some problems with our engine overheating, Ivan and TJ helped determine what exactly was wrong, faulty thermostats, and even fixed it after we came back home and sent down the necessary parts with Ivan's daughter. Then there is Lief. When we arrived in Ensenada I wasn't sure how exactly we were going to get back to San Diego with all of our luggage (we flew out of San Diego), but I decided not to loose sleep over this detail and let fate take it's course. As it turned out the marina manager offered to arrange transportation then shortly thereafter I met Lief, a friend of Ivan and Vesna's, outside the office talking to Stan. After telling him of our plans he offered to drive us to San Diego in his roomy suburban - he was picking up his wife at the airport the same day we were flying out. Of course we accepted. What a wonderful and generous person!
Our three days in Ensenada were spent socializing with Ivan, Vesna and Lief and giving Impossible a thorough cleaning before her 4 month stay in the heat and humidity. It will be interesting to see if there is any funny growth happening in a forgotten uncleaned locker somewhere.
We are all so looking forward to continuing on with our voyage in December, this time without the time constraints.
