Today's story started as we arrived at the Cedar Lake Woods and Gardens in Williston, FL. This was a one hundred year old abandoned limestone quarry (supplied stone for Route 27) that was purchased by a man who wanted to make it into a fishing hole. He moved in rocks and cement and made many "ponds" and walls and islands, eventually deciding he wanted to add plantings, and then found he loved to garden as much as fish. The result is unique. I've never seen anything like it. It is a bit past its prime, but still beautiful. The drive into the gardens is a dirt road with potholes and twists and turns making you feel as though you are not in the right place, but eventually we made our way to the office and started on the walk. Photos don't do it justice, but I included one anyway.
We left there and drove a bit and stopped at the Suwannee Belle Landing in Fanning Springs, FL for lunch. Sitting on a deck overlooking the river, we ate an oyster po'boy (Bill) and fried local shrimp for me. They were really perfect!
Off to Daphne, AL, we stopped for the night at a Microtel. After wine and snacks we had dinner across the street at the Boudreaux's Cajun Grill. Again, the food was very good - Bill had gumbo and a chicken dish and I had "Smothered Catfish." We talked to a couple about sailing - they are trying to find a Catalina to replace theirs that was destroyed in Hurricane Sally. Very nice people and we exchanged numbers. So far we have really enjoyed ourselves! Of course, we are watching Elsa, the tropical storm that is developing...
